Superior stumbles in loss to Point

UW-Stevens Point 5, UW-Superior 2

SUPERIOR, Wis. (February 10, 2018) – The Yellowjackets failed to bounce back in their home finale Saturday afternoon. Superior was able to take an early lead, but the Pointer offense added four goals in two periods to secure a win.

It took some time for the first period to get going for both teams. Each surrendering a penalty, but it soon picked up at the 11:48 mark. The Pointers would find a goal to take a 1-0, but that only lasted for 19 seconds as Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) scored the unassisted goal at 12:07 to tie 1-1. Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) then scored 54 seconds later on an assist from Cragg to take a one-goal lead.

The lead would hold into the first intermission.

The Yellowjackets' fortune soon changed in the second period, as the Pointers scored quickly at 2:01, and then again at 8:22 to take a one-score lead. The Pointers saw an uptick in their shots in the second, putting 13 on net in just the first 15 minutes. It was a 3-2 Pointer lead heading into the final period.

The woes continued for the 'Jackets in the start of the final period. Stevens Point saw two goals in eight minutes, first at 1:21 and then again at 7:28. Superior was down 5-2.

These would be the final goals of the game, setting the 'Jackets back.

The penalty minutes hurt the 'Jackets in this one, taking eight penalties for 16 minutes. The shots leveled out to fairly even, Superior produced 30 to the Pointers' 32.

The Yellowjackets will play their final regular-season contest this Tuesday, making the trip across to Duluth for a non-conference matchup with St. Scholastica.
