No. 2 Pointers too much for Yellowjackets

UW-Stevens Point 4, UW-Superior 2

SUPERIOR, Wis. (February 3, 2018) – The Yellowjackets faced one of the toughest team in the country Saturday night, hosting No. 2 UW-Stevens Point. Superior found itself on the board first, but was unable to find the upset at home.

It didn't take long for the Yellowjackets to get on the board, Jerry Miettunen (Tuusula, Finland/Makelanrinne Spoerts) found twine on passes from Evgeny Yakovlev (Belgorod, Russia) and Liam Blais (Uxbridge, Ont./Uxbridge Secondary) at 2:31 of the first for the early 1-0 lead. Superior's defense then hung with the Pointers until the 12:51 mark when Colin Raver scored to tie 1-1, and then Tanner Karty netted one at 16:10 to make it a 2-1 Pointer lead after one period of play.

The second period was much more tame than the first, as each team only collected one penalty, and only one goal was scored; Stevens Point added to their lead at 9:16 when Austin Kelly scored. It was a 3-1 game at the second intermission.

The Pointers would control the puck on their offensive end for what seemed forever in the third period, but the Yellowjackets saw some light at the 18:27 mark of the third as Connor Hamonic (Winnipeg, Man./Vincent Massey Collegiate) scored his first of the season once again on passes from Yakovlev and Blais to try and mount the comeback.

Cole Skinner (Lunenberg, N.S./Parkview Education Centre) was pulled from the crease just a few seconds later, but the extra man couldn't produce points, the Pointers tacked on the insurance goal with just a half second remaining.

Skinner was busy between the pipes for Superior, making 30 saves on the night. The Yellowjacket special teams units also played well, going 6-for-6 on the kill, including four in the first period.

Superior will look to bounce back next week as they play a rare Thursday evening game vs UW-River Falls Feb. 8, making their final homestand at 7:05 p.m.
