UW-Superior 1, UW-Stevens Point 1
SUPERIOR, Wis. (February 9, 2018) – The Yellowjackets found a clutch goal in the third period of Senior Night to level the game at 1-1; the rest of the game saw no scoring from either side, resulting in a tie, the Yellowjackets' second of the season.
The Yellowjackets came out firing in the first period, getting six shots on goal in the first nine minutes. The teams played a rough-and-tumble first couple of minutes, but with a lack of whistles. The first penalty came at 9:47 when the Pointers were called for hooking, but the 'Jackets were unable to capitalize on the two minutes. The Pointers would get a power play of their own, but the Yellowjacket penalty kill proved worthy. It was a 0-0 contest after one, even with 15 Superior shots on goal.
The second period continued in a similar way for both teams, adding shots and taking penalties. It took almost the entire period for a team to score: the Pointers would get on the board with 53 seconds remaining. 'Jackets were down 1-0 after two periods.
The Yellowjackets kept fighting in the final period of the play, adding 13 shots in the first 13 minutes, but senior Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) came up clutch at the 12:03 mark of the period, scoring on the rebound shot in front of the net. She was assisted on the play by Jenna Curtis (Siren, Wis./Webster) to get the game tied 1-1.
Neither team could find the back of the net to finish the final period, forcing overtime.
It was a tense final five minutes, as both teams put shots towards the net. Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) put in great work between the pipes in that time, making four critical saves. The 'Jackets would have a few good looks at the net, but couldn't burry the puck, resulting in a tie.
Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) led the team in shots with eight total, followed by Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) with five, while Curtis and Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) each had four.
Superior will look to get the win tomorrow as they play their final regular-season game at home with Point. Puck drops at 2 p.m.
