'Jackets fall in two close games

Carroll 2, UW-Superior 1 | Maryville (Tenn.) 4, UW-Superior 2

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 23, 2018) – The Yellowjackets found themselves in two close games against the Carroll Pioneers and Maryville Scots Friday morning, but were unable to find a win.

Game 1

It was a pitcher's duel with only 12 hits between the two teams. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) took the mound for Superior pitching the full eight-inning game; striking out four batters while walking one.

Carroll would score in the second inning, stringing together a double and a single for a 1-0 game. The two pitchers would go back-and-forth, retiring sides until the fourth inning when Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) had a lead-off double and Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) brought her home on a single for a 1-1 tie.

The game was knotted at 1-1 after the final seventh inning, forcing an extra eighth. The Pioneers capitalized on the extra time, bringing their second-base player home after a sacrifice and single to take a 2-1 lead.

Superior pushed extra runner Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) to third on a sacrifice, but was unable to find the extra hit and tie.

Game 2

It was another tight duel with Maryville in the second game. The Scots would score one run in the third and two runs in the fourth to go up 3-0 after four.

The Yellowjackets found two scores in the following fifth inning. Gidley stretched a bunt of r single to lead off the inning, but was put out on a fielder's choice that gave Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) first. The big bat of Ciarra Stavang (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld ) took the plate; she belted a homer over the right-center wall to make it 3-2.

After a few walks, the Scots added the insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, securing the win.
