TUCSON, Ariz. (March 24, 2018) – The Yellowjackets fell in their final game of the Tucson Invitational Friday, an early lead was built and the game was tight through five innings, but a big eighth from the Cardinals put the game out of reach.
The Cardinals would put up one run in their half of the first inning, scoring on a few singles and hit-by-pitch, but Superior answered with points in the bottom of the inning.
Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) drew first on a walk and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) used his bat to bring McNosky home, belting a single. The game was tied 1-1. Immediately after, a second score came from Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) as he continued his hitting streak with a single, brining C. Albertson home. Superior held an early 2-1 lead after the first.
The game remained tight through four innings as freshman lefty Ryan Rodriguez (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) kept the game under control. The Cardinal would score four in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
The Yellowjackets answered in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two after an error from the Cardinal and a C. Albertson single; Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) would both score to cut the game to one.
The game was again tight as the teams put batters away. It came to the eighth inning, Wesleyan put together a five-score half inning, followed by four more scores in the ninth. The Yellowjackets added one score in the final inning of the game, but came up short 14-5.
