MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (March 8, 2018) - The Yellowjackets battled in both of their games against the Carroll Pioneers Thursday afternoon, but fell short in the final innings at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Game 1
The Yellowjackets played a tight first game, as Carroll scored right away to take a 1-0 lead. A pitching battle would ensue as the teams combined for eight total hits in the game.
The Pioneers would add another run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice ball to the second baseman Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West).
Superior would rally in the final inning. Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) found his first triple of the season, and Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) would drive him home on a single. Two quick outs from Carroll would down the 'Jackets and finish the game.
Game 2
Game two saw the Pioneers jump out to an early 2-0 lead. The 'Jackets would score their first run with two outs in the first; C. Albertson added another triple to his line and was brought home by a Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) two out single. The 'Jackets were down 2-1 after one.
The Pioneers added three runs in the third innings, taking a 5-1 lead.
Superior chipped away at the Carroll lead in the fourth. Lawniczak would find first again, followed by a Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) double for a second score. The 'Jackets added another run in the bottom of the fifth; Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) would walk and get to second on a wild pitch. He was then drove to third after Osness ground out to second.
Another Rolf single brought Pitts home, making it 5-3 Pioneers.
In the top of the sixth, Carroll added four runs to put the game out of reach.
The Yellowjackets would put together a few hits in the bottom of the seventh, including a double from Jason Steinke (Sebeka, Minn./Sebeka)Â but the Pioneers would close out the game on top.

Due to a weather cancelation, the Yellowjackets will not face Grinnell this coming weekend, but will look to tune up before they start their Spring Break trip at the Tucson Invitational March 17. They will face Carroll once again in the opening game of the tournament.
