UW-Superior 9, Northwestern 0 (5 innings) | UW-Superior 5, Northwestern 4
SUPERIOR, Wis. (April 10, 2018) – The Yellowjackets got two solid wins over the UMAC-leading Northwestern Eagles on a chilly Tuesday afternoon. Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) pitched lights-out in the first game, earing the shutout, and then came in for the save in the final inning of game two.
Game 1
Superior sprung on the Eagles in the first inning as Ciarra Stavang (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld ) singled and then advanced to second on a Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) sacrifice. A steal from Stavang put her on third and a Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) single brought her home. Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) would push Patrick home on a center-field single to end the inning up 2-0.
The Yellowjackets had a big third inning to put the game out of reach. With Stavang and Cragg on base, Patrick lifted the ball over the center-field wall for the three run shot; Superior was up 5-0. Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) would continue the hitting followed by Tulip to put runners on.
A pitching change came for the Eagles after Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) drew a walk. Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) was up next and able to reach on an error and score Tulip. Bobbi Jean Miller (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis) the pitch hit in the no. 9 position, singling and getting two runs to score. Superior was up big 8-0 after three.
The final run came in the fourth after White was pushed home by Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) who doubled to center.
Hanson pitched the final fifth inning, getting one of her seven strikeouts.
Game 2
Hanson came on to pitch the first inning of game two, but Damara Theis (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) soon took over in the top of the second after White homered for two RBIs in the bottom of the first.
The Eagles would add a run in the second on a home run to center, but Superior bounced back in the third inning.
Stavang started the inning with a walk, followed by a Cragg double for the RBI and a two-run lead. Patrick then brought Cragg home on a sacrifice hit to first base to make it 4-1, and Gidley sacrificed to center to bring White home. It was 5-1 'Jackets after three innings.
Northwestern would fight back in the last two innings, making it 5-4 in the top of the sixth with runners on, but Thies was able to get the popup and get out of the jam; Hanson then came on in the final seventh to strikeout all three batters and get the save.
White was dynamite from the plate in both games, going 3-of-5 with two RBIs while Patrick also hit the ball well with two hits and five RBIs.
