UW-Superior 10, Martin Luther 2 | UW-Superior 11, Martin Luther 2
SUPERIOR, Wis. (April 12, 2018) – Two home runs from Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) Thursday afternoon helped the Yellowjackets to a 5-1 conference record as they took two wins from Martin Luther.
Game 1
The first two innings were scoreless for both teams, but Superior soon found their groove in the third as Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) reached on an error and then stole second. A Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) single would advance Cragg to third, and an Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) double cleared the bases for a 2-0 lead.
The Yellowjackets continued scoring in the fourth when a sacrifice hit from Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) brought home Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior), and a Patrick home run scored three more to make it 6-0 'Jackets.
The Knights fought back in the following half inning, scoring two, but the game was ended in the bottom of the fifth by Superior. The 'Jackets played bag-to-bag and were able to score when Cragg was hit by a pitch; the final run of the game was a Patrick sacrifice fly to bring home Fjeran, ending the game 10-2 in five innings after some great pitching from Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) who had 10 strikeouts in the game.
Game 2
The second game got started with a bang when Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) hammered a grand slam over the left center wall to make it an early 4-0 game. Superior added another run in the first, brining home Gidley when Bobbi Jean Miller (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis) singled to right, making it 5-0.
The Knights added a run on three hits in the second inning, but Superior continued to widen the gap on a White sacrifice fly, scoring Ciarra Stavang (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld ).
The game would stay locked at 7-2 after the Knights added a run in the third inning, and Superior another in the fourth with another White hit.
Fjeran walked to begin the bottom of the sixth, and was brought home by Cragg on a single to left field. It was now White's turn at the plate with two on. She didn't miss, lifting another ball over left center, sending everyone home on a walk-off home run.
White was on fire from the batter's box, going 3-for-3 in the second game. Cragg also had a good day in the no. 2 spot, going 5-of-6 from the dish.
