'Jackets take two games from Rams

UW-Superior 13, North Central 0 | UW-Superior 2, North Central 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (April 21, 2018) – The Yellowjackets put the hurt on the North Central Rams Saturday, putting together 15 runs on 19 hits and winning both games.

Game 1

Superior got scoring early when Ciarra Stavang (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld ) singled and advanced to third on the throw; Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) would bring her home on a bunt single. Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) launched a triple to score Cragg and then Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) sacrifice bunt scored Patrick to make it a 3-0 'Jacket lead. One more score came in the inning when Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) singled to bring around Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes).

Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) struck out the first three batters for North Central to help cushion the lead; Superior would give Hanson a bigger lead in the second, scoring on an error and a double from Gidley to lead 6-0.

A 7-0 lead was in the third when Stavang, who walked to start the inning, scored on the fielder's choice to third. White who had reached first on the previous play stole second on the next pitch; a throwing error by the center fielder scored White unearned for 8-0.

The game was set in the fourth inning for Superior as they piled on four more runs for 13-0. Hanson and Damara Theis (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) pitched five innings for the 'Jackets, surrendering only one hit and striking out a combined seven batters.

Game 2

The second game was a lot closer than the first.

Gidley singled and then advanced to second on a throwing error in the second inning; she scored on the following play when Bobbijean Miller singled. Stavang singled in her at-bat to score Miller for a 2-0 lead after two innings.

The game remained a 2-0 'Jacket lead all the way through the bottom of the seventh with the help of Hanson's arm.

The Rams found their only run on a homer in their first at-bat of the seventh. Hanson took care of business in for the three final outs and another Yellowjacket win.

The Yellowjackets had 13 hits in the first game, led by Gidley who collected five hits and Cragg who had three hits with three runs.
