SUPERIOR, Wis. (April 22, 2018) – The Yellowjackets split their non-conference matchup with the Finlandia Lions Sunday night under the lights.
Game 1
Elliot Danhoff (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone) had a quick first inning on the mound for Superior, throwing seven pitches for the first three outs. Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) got the 'Jackets going with two singles to start the bottom of the first; Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) would drive both home on a single to left-center. Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) and Alec Rabin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) scored two more with singles, and Rolf launched a grand slam for an 8-0 lead.
A wild pitch in the second inning added to the Yellowjacket lead as Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) slid home for the 9-0 lead. The Lions would muster a few runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 9-3, but Superior added four more in the fifth inning.
Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) and Ossness both secured doubles in the fifth inning to clear the bases, while Lawniczak scored on an error from the Lions. It was a 13-3 game heading into the sixth.
The game ended in the top of the seventh when Dante Bender (Gurney, Wis./Hurley) threw a strikeout, getting the 'Jackets their second win of the 2018 campaign.
Game 2
The Lions jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, 2-0. The 'Jackets found their first run of the game when C. Albertson launched a solo shot, cutting the Lion lead in half.
Finlandia added to their lead in the top of the second, scoring three more to hold a 5-1 lead. The 'Jackets fired back with a few singles; Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) drove in Zach Remund (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) to make it a 5-2 game.
Ben Bergman (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) was pitching well for the 'Jackets, throwing a no-hitter with seven strikeouts until the top of the sixth inning.
A bases-clearing triple from Stephen Albertson (Stillwater, Minn/Stillwater) helped the Yellowjackets score another run in the bottom of the sixth, making it a 5-3 game; Superior couldn't find the few runs needed in the final half inning, falling to the Lions.
McNosky and Rolf both hit well from the plate in the first game, both getting 3-of-5 hits, while Berrios collected two hits on five at-bats in the second game.
