UW-Superior 11, Northland 8 | Northland 9, UW-Superior 8 (10 inn.)
SUPERIOR, Wis. (April 24, 2018) – The Yellowjackets got their first conference win of the 2018 campaign Tuesday, beating Northland in the first game of the schedule doubleheader. The second game was postponed and made up May 4, 2018. The Yellowjackets fell in 10 inning by an 9-8 score.
Game 1
Superior got off to a hot start in the top of the third, putting together a string of singles for two runs from Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) and Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer)
Northland responded in the bottom of the fourth with a five-run inning. Two innings would go scoreless until the top of the seventh when Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) scored unearned when Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) reached on an error and then Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) scored on the sacrifice fly from Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West).
The Lumberjacks used their half of the seventh to score one more for a 6-4 lead.
In the following inning with one out, Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount) stepped up to the plate and jacked a three-run homer to left center to give Superior a 7-6 lead. The 'Jackets would add the lead on a single from Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) to bring Boyde home, and a stolen base attempt that scored Rolf on the throw to second.
The inning continued for Superior as C. Albertson padded the 'Jacket lead with an absolute bomb to left field, making it 11-6.
Northland threatened in the final inning with two runs, but Superior secured the 11-8 UMAC win. Â
Barr pitched a solid six innings in the game, while Brady Stocker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) pitched the final three with four strikeouts.
At the plate, C. Albertson and Lawniczak were a combined 4-of-8 with three RBI, while Berrios drew four walks on the day.
Game 2
The second game saw an 8-8 tie headed for extra innings and was made up on May 4, 2018. Superior found runners on in the top of the 10th inning but couldn't capitalize. The Lumberjacks loaded the bases in their half inning, and scored on a walk for a 9-8 win.
