‘Jackets get two big wins over Knights

UW-Superior 10, Martin Luther 4 | UW-Superior 9, Martin Luther 0

NEW ULM, Minn. (April 27, 2018) - The Yellowjackets got two big wins over Martin Luther Friday afternoon behind great pitching and solid hitting. The 'Jackets now move to 3-6 in the UMAC.

Game 1

The Knights scored one run in the first inning, but starting pitcher Trevor Roszczewski (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union) soon settled down and retire batters to the third inning. Martin Luther then added two runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.

The 'Jackets soon fired back in the bottom half of the fourth. The bases were loaded after a few errors from the Knights; Colin Welch (Acton, Calif./Golden Valley) singled through the left side, scoring Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount). Stephen Albertson (Stillwater, Minn/Stillwater) then added two points for the 'Jackets on a single up the middle.

Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) was hit by pitch in his at-bat to get the 'Jacket lead to 4-3. Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) flied out to right field, scoring S. Albertson from third for 5-3, and then Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) would single for a 6-3 lead after the fourth inning.

Superior added to their lead in the bottom of the third when Welch hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka). Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) would score on an error for an 8-3 lead.

Roszczewski continued to pitch well into the sixth and Jason Steinke (Sebeka, Minn./Sebeka) found a single in the sixth to get on base; he then scored when Boyde tripled. It was 9-3 after six.

Drew Gran (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) came in for the save in the top of the seventh, and the final run for the 'Jackets came when Devin Salas (Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien) scored from third on a wild pitch, taking the win 10-4.

Game 2

Superior got off to a great start in game two. Berrios, McNosky, and C. Albertson loaded the bases to start the inning; Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount) then singled to score Berrios and Rolf doubled to center to bring the other two home for a 3-0 lead.

Elliot Danhoff (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone) found the start for the 'Jackets, and pitched well in the opening innings. The Yellowjackets gave him three more runs in the third when Boyde hit a sacrifice fly and Rolf hit a bases-clearing triple. He then came home on a wild pitch for a 6-0 lead.

Security runs came in the sixth for Danhoff. Berrios walked in the second at-bat of the inning, and McNosky singled through the middle for two on the base paths. C. Albertson homered to left field for three RBIs and a 9-0 score.

Danhoff pitched the complete game for Supeiror, throwing 10 strikeouts, allowing four hits, and winning his second game of the season.
