‘Jackets clinch UMAC Playoffs with wins over Cougars

UW-Superior 4, Minnesota Morris 1 | UW-Superior 12, Minnesota Morris 2 (5 inn.)

SUPERIOR, Wis. (April 28, 2018) – The Yellowjackets secured a playoff spot in the UMAC Tournament with their two wins over the Minnesota Morris Cougars.

Game 1

The Cougars would get out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after two hits. The Yellowjackets responded in the bottom of the second with a Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) home run to left-center field, tying 1-1.

Two more runs came in the bottom of the third when Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) and Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) doubled and singled. Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) drove home Patrick on a sacrifice fly to center, and then White scored on a Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) single up the middle for a 3-1 lead.

The last run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Ciarra Stavang (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld ) grounded out to third and Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) scored from third.

Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) pitched all seven innings for Superior, throwing eight strikeouts and allowing only five hits.

Game 2

Superior scored quickly in game two. Patrick found a double in her first at-bat and then scored when White scored on the error. Tulip would single soon after and bring White home for a 2-0 lead after one inning.

The Cougars cut the lead in half in their first inning with two hits, but Superior got the lead back to two runs when Lizzy Borgwardt (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) singled, stole second, and then scored on a Stavang single to second.

It became a 5-1 'Jacket lead in the third after two sacrifice hits from Gidley and Kinnunen, and then a 91 game in the fourth following a Tulip triple, Gidly sacrifice, and Kinnunen single.

It came to the bottom of the fifth, and the Yellowjackets needed three runs to secure the 10-run victory. Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover) and Stavang both hit to right center to put runners on first and third. Patrick found the plate thereafter, hitting the walk-off home run on a 1-0 count; securing the 12-2 win.

Damara Theis (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) was in control in the circle as she pitched the complete five innings.
