AUSTIN, Minn. (April 7, 2018) – The Yellowjackets returned to action Saturday afternoon, collecting their first conference win of the year.
Game 1
The Vikings got off to a hot start in the first inning, putting a home run over the left field wall to go up 1-0. Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) would return fire in the 'Jacket half of the first, singling up the middle, but Superior couldn't bring her home.
Macy Hanson (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) pitched well through four innings, striking out eight batters, including five in a row from the second to third innings. Bethany Lutheran added two more in the fourth inning, going up 3-0 on four hits, and then the final run of the game in the top of the sixth.
The Yellowjackets found only three hits in the game, falling 4-0.
Game 2
The second game saw no runs through the first three and a half innings until the 'Jackets scored one. Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) would single to center while Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) singled to advance Tulip to third. A sacrifice ground ball to second scored Tulip to get the run.
The Vikings scored five in the following half inning to take a sizable lead, but the 'Jackets fired back to cut the lead down. Ciarra Stavang (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld ) walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Patrick brought her home on a double to left field, making it 5-2. A throwing error scored Patrick and put Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) on second; White was then brought home on a Kinnunen single to make it just a one-score, 5-4 game.
The Vikings would score quickly in the next inning to take a big 8-4 lead, but Superior wasn't done scoring either.
Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) doubled to start the sixth, and Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) singled to score Gidley. Patrick would then push a single home to bring home Stavang and move Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) to third. Another run was added by a sacrifice hit from Tulip to make it 8-7.
The Yellowjackets added the game winning runs when Kinnunen found another hit, doubling down the left field line.
Hanson would get credited with a save in the top of the seventh, striking out the final batter and getting the win.

The Yellowjackets hope to play at home this Tuesday as their scheduled to take on Northwestern at 3:30 p.m. at Liebaert Field.
