Yellowjackets get two walk-off wins over Cougars

UW-Superior 16, Minnesota Morris 6 (7 innings) | UW-Superior 10, Minnesota Morris 8 (10 innings)

SUPERIOR, Wis. (May 5, 2018) – To keep their postseason hopes alive, the Yellowjackets needed two wins against Minnesota Morris, and they did just that Saturday afternoon.

Game 1

Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount) got the runs scoring in the first inning, singling on a fist pitch up the middle to score Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) and Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle). Tyler Evans (Andover, Minn./Andover) would reach on an error later in the inning, scoring Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) and Barr for a 4-0 lead. Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) would single to left and score Evans to make it a 5-0 lead after one inning.

Barr continued to bring guys home in the second, scoring Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) and McNosky for a big 7-0 lead after two.

Barr also go the start on the mound for Superior, keeping the game scoreless through four innings. Boyde would give him some insurance runs in the fourth, singling to center and scoring Berrios. The 'Jackets would move around the bases on a wild pitch for 9-0, and then 11-0 when Lawniczak added another hit to score Barr and Boyde.

Grett Pitts made the game 13-0 to end the fourth inning on a single through the left side; Lawniczak and Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) would score.

Barr notched his fifth RBI of the game in the fifth inning when he singled through the left side scoring McNosky for a 14-0 game.

The Cougars would fire back with six runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but Lawniczak had the last laugh when he singled through the right side to walk off in the seventh inning.

Game 2

The Yellowjackets continued their good hitting through the first inning of the second game. McNosky would walk and C. Albertson reached on an error to put men on first and third. Barr crushed the ball in the next at-bat with a three-run homer to center field for a 3-0 lead.

Morris would score two in the second inning on two hits, making it a one-score game.

It continued to be tight through the fourth until the Cougars scored five runs for a 5-3 game. Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) made tied the game in the following half inning with a bases-clearing double to right center. It was 5-5.

The Cougars found some juice in the eight with a double that score one run, but Superior kept fighting with a McNosky singled to center, scoring Pitts and Osness.

It came to the ninth inning. Morris took a 8-7 lead on a fielder's choice and walk. Boyde didn't want to go home in just nine innings though, he jacked a ball to left center field to tie the game at 8-8.

The bottom of the tenth saw Berrios take a pitch to the elbow to take first base, and then two outs would bring C. Albertson to the plate. He called game on a 0-1 count and drove a bomb to center. With a slow trot around the bases the 'Jackets won 10-8.

McNosky had a great day from the dish, going 5-of-9 with two RBI, while C. Albertson had three hits on eight at-bats. Barr was something else, doing it all with five hits, eight RBIs, a home run, and seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.

The Yellowjackets (9-21, 7-7 UMAC) will look to secure their postseason spot tomorrow afternoon at Crown. The 'Jackets need one win to enter the UMAC Tournament.
