Yellowjacket Athletics has announced an expansion to its partnership with the UW-Superior campus radio station, 91.3 FM KUWS, on a sports broadcast lineup for the 2018-19 year.
KUWS is the longtime radio broadcast home of Yellowjacket men's basketball, men's hockey, and women's basketball and in 2018-19 those radio staples will be joined on the airwaves by Yellowjacket baseball, men's soccer, softball, volleyball, women's hockey, and women's soccer.
"We are extremely excited for the opportunity to grow our relationship with another entity on campus," said UW-Superior Athletics Director
Nick Bursik. "Both Yellowjacket Athletics and KUWS have a focus on the student experience, and the expansion of the broadcast schedule provides us with a great vehicle to create a positive student experience, both for those competing and those who work at the radio station."
KUWS broadcasted 54 men's basketball, men's hockey, and women's basketball games in 2017-18. That number will increase to 80 broadcasts in 2018-19, not including potential playoff contests.
"Today a majority of attention is on streaming games over the internet and you see fewer schools offering games on the radio," said UW-Superior Sports Information Manager
Jon Garver, who is also the longtime radio voice of Yellowjacket men's hockey. "We're fortunate that we have our arrangement with the iFan Sports Network to provide the video stream of all our home games, but adding more contests to KUWS is gives us another way to tell our story and give our programs exposure.
"We see it as a tremendous growth opportunity. It was great to sit down with Paul Damberg at KUWS and put together a schedule of this magnitude, knowing we were increasing the reach for six of our teams and over 100 student-athletes."
In addition to the increase in games being broadcast, Yellowjacket Athletics and KUWS will partner on a weekly show that will be available via podcast. Garver and veteran Yellowjacket broadcaster Matt Johnson will host the yet-to-be-named program that will feature Yellowjacket coaches and student-athletes as well as in-depth stories about Yellowjacket Athletics and UW-Superior.
"For several years Yellowjacket Athletics had a weekly radio program on the air, whether it was broadcast from the KUWS studios or through a live remote, and it was an incredible tool for us to be able to tell our story and gain exposure for our programs in the area," Garver said. "It will be a little different this time around, but we are excited to be able to bring back our weekly program in podcast mode. I think the listeners are really going to enjoy it, too."
The full KUWS radio sports schedule of weekly shows and game broadcasts will come out later this summer.
