The Yellowjacket women's soccer team took to the pitch Sunday, looking for its first win of the 2018 campaign and the chance to even its record after Friday's defeat by UW-River Falls. The opponent was a Lakeland University club coming off its first win of the year, a 2-1 victory against North Central.
Both teams had numerous chances throughout Sunday's tilt, but after 110 minutes of soccer nothing was decided, and the teams settled for a 0-0 tie in double overtime at the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex.
The Yellowjackets carried the play for much of the first half, outshooting the Muskies 3-0. The best opportunity came just past the midway point of the half when
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) got the ball in tight and rattled a shot off the crossbar.
Lakeland came alive in the second half, outshooting the Yellowjackets 6-5 in the frame, but once again the best chances belonged to the home team. And unfortunately, the goal frame came into play a second time. This time it was
Liza Shelquist (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) who was foiled by the crossbar, hitting the iron late in the match with what would have been the game winning goal.
As the teams went to overtime both had chances, but the first ten minutes decided nothing. The Yellowjackets had a marked advantage in the second overtime, holding a 5-1 edge in shots, but the scoreless trend continued and the 110 minutes passed without anyone getting on the scoreboard.
The Yellowjackets outshot Lakeland 15-10 on the day. Shelquist and Schussman led the way with four shots apiece, while
Tatum Lardinois (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) added three shots. The teams finished even with five shots on goal apiece. Shelquist, who had an abundance of chances in the match, led the Yellowjackets with two shots on goal.
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) started in goal for the Yellowjackets before giving way to
Linnea Bollum (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) in the second half. Philliber then returned to keep goal for both overtime periods. She finished with two saves in 65 minutes of play, while Bollum made three saves in 45 minutes of action.
Up Next: The Yellowjackets (0-1-1, 0-0-0 U.M.A.C.) are off until Saturday, September 8 when they travel to Menomonie, Wis. to take on UW-Stout. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
