SAINT, Paul, Minn.: The UW-Superior women's track and field team opened the 2019 portion of its schedule with a strong showing at the UST Opener, hosted by St. Thomas, at Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex Friday. 
 
Junior Mikaela Shepard (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) finished second in the 400 meters in a time of 1:02.61. She also took seventh in the in the 200 in 28.43. Her classmate, LeAnn Torgerson (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors), was just four tenths of a second behind in eighth place.
 
Torgerson also finished 13th in the 60-meter dash prelims, clocking in at 8.67 seconds. 
 
Freshman Nicole Koski (Park Falls, Wis./Chequamegon) ran a 6:13.33 mile for 13th overall, while senior Ali Manthy was 12th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 12:41.88.
 
In field events, Minnesota Duluth transfer Carson Haase (Brandon, S.D./Brandon Valley) was sixth in the shot put with a top mark of 10.40 meters and seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 13.10 meters. 
 
The Yellowjackets return to action next Saturday when they host the Twin Ports Invite at the Lydia Thering Fieldhouse. Events are slated to begin at 11 a.m.
