SUPERIOR, Wis.: Tenth-ranked UW-Eau Claire scored four unanswered goals from four different skaters to top the UW-Superior women's hockey team, 4-1, at Wessman Arena Friday.
Morgan Zirbel's goal at 15:24 of the second period was the difference as her shot from the left circle beat UWS goaltender
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) on the glove side for a 2-1 lead.
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) opened the scoring midway through the first period to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 advantage. She stole the puck from an Eau Claire player in the neutral zone and beat netminder Erin Connolly from the left circle. Her team-leading 13th goal of the season came at 10:22.
Courtney Wittig tied the game, 1-1, just 10 seconds later with her 15th of the season from Sami Meister.
The Blugolds added two more in the third period. Nine seconds into a power play, Taylor Treu beat Johnson over the shoulder from the high slot at 10:32.
Just over five minutes later, Holly Turnbull's low wrister from the point beat Johnson to the stick side. Hanna Zavoral and Emma Peterson assisted on her fifth goal of the year.
Johnson made 35 saves for UWS, which fell to 7-12-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the WIAC. Connolly stopped 17-of-18 shots for Eau Claire, helping the Blugolds improve to 12-4-2 and 2-1-0 in the league.
Eau Claire finished 1-for-3 on the power play while the 'Jackets did not score with the extra skater in two opportunities.
The two teams close the series at Eau Claire's Hobbs Arena Saturday at 2 p.m.
