ASHLAND, Wis.: Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) and
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) combined for 28 points and the UW-Superior women's basketball team scored half of its points in the paint as the Yellowjackets earned an 88-62 victory over Northland at Chapple Family Gym Wednesday.
Reinertsen scored a team-high points 15 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field, and Norlin contributed 13, making five of her 10 attempts, as UWS improved to 17-2 overall and 9-1 in the UMAC.
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) added 10 points and four assists, while
Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior) tied her career high with nine points in the win.
Superior jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game with seven points coming from Reinertsen. Northland closed to within six points four times in the first quarter, before the 'Jackets took control.
Morgan Anderson (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) closed the period with a layup in the final seconds to give UWS a 27-13 advantage.
Up, 34-17, with six minutes remaining in the half, the Yellowjackets engineered a 14-0 run over 2:33 to extend their lead to 48-17. Carpenter and Norlin each scored five points in the stretch as Superior went 5-for-6 from the floor.
UWS led, 53-26, at the half, marking the first time it scored 50-plus points in a half in 19 games this season.
Anderson drained a jumper off of a Norlin steal and Carpenter assist with four minutes left in the third quarter for a 65-37 edge – the largest of the period.
Then,
Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) scored four quick points with four minutes remaining in the game, pushing the 'Jackets' lead to 34 at 86-52, as they coasted to the win.
The Yellowjackets turned Northland over 20 times, leading to 25 points and outrebounded their host by four, 33-29.
The Lumberjills (5-11, 2-8) were led offensively by Ashton Meadows with a game-high 16 points. Aja Gregg scored 12 and Bryza Pizano tallied 10 for Northland.
Superior returns home to host Martin Luther Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
