SUPERIOR, Wis.: Five UW-Superior women's basketball players scored in double figures and the Yellowjackets' defense limited visiting Martin Luther to single-digit points in three quarters in an 89-30 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference victory Saturday.
Seventeen 'Jackets saw the floor and 14 scored points as Superior picked up its 10th win in the league, improving 18-2 overall and 10-1 in the UMAC.
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the way.
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) had 13 points and five boards, and
Lindsey Jalivay (Eagan, Minn./Rosemount) added a career-high 13 of her own with three assists off the bench.
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) also tallied a career-best 11 points with four rebounds, two assists and two blocks, while
Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) registered 10 points and five boards.
UWS was off and running from the start, scoring the game's first 12 points. Five players contributed points in the run, including Reinertsen, who had four in the first 3:22. Sarah Dewey put Martin Luther on the board with a fastbreak layup before a Reinertsen bucket and Ruiz 3-pointer extended the lead to 17-2 with 3:43 remaining in the first quarter.
The Knights got a basket from Cassandra Rose in the final minute of the period for a 17-4 deficit heading into the second.
Superior pushed the lead to 40-12 with another Ruiz trey with 3:21 left in the half, and held a 43-12 advantage at the break.
Jalivay scored eight consecutive points, taking over the game in the final minute of the third quarter. She drained two straight shots from distance and followed it with a layup in transition with 27 seconds remaining in the quarter for a 71-16 lead.
Martin Luther (1-18, 1-10 UMAC) finally scored double figures in the fourth quarter with 14 as Emily Witkowski had eight points and Rose four to lead the Knights. Witkowski had a team-high 11 points in the game and Samantha Paul had five rebounds.
Superior scored 44 points off 31 MLC turnovers. The Knights shot just 21.6 percent from the field, while UWS was 45 percent from the floor.
