Big Second Half for Northwestern Sinks ‘Jackets

SUPERIOR, Wis.: Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) scored 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting and Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) added 15 points, five rebounds and three assists, but it wasn't enough as Northwestern used a 54-point second half to distance itself for a 94-70 win over the UW-Superior men's basketball team Wednesday.

Freshman Carter Brown (Eau Claire. Wis./Regis Catholic) earned his first career start, tallying a career high 11 points and two rebounds in 25 minutes, while Andrew McGill (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union) posted seven points and 10 boards.

A tight game into the second half, it featured four tie scores and nine lead changes before UNW pulled away. The Eagles put four players in double figures, led by Anderson Bazile's 21 points. Brady Peterson and Noah Alm – both reserves –recorded 15 points apiece, while Caleb Hageman added 12. Northwestern improved to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the UMAC with the win. The 'Jackets fell to 2-13 overall and 1-6 in the league with the loss.

Down, 17-15 with 7:52 remaining in the first half, Brown hit one of his three 3-pointers on the night to Superior the lead. The Eagles, though, ran off nine consecutive points in two-and-a-half minutes to take a 26-18 advantage. Bazile scored seven in the run.

Bazile then knocked down a trey with 1:15 left in the half to help his team open an 11-point, 40-29 edge. UWS got a jumper from Scott and layup by John Pioro (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) to account for the 40-33 halftime deficit.

The 'Jackets began the second half on a 7-0 run in 2:33 to tie the game at 40. Reykdal scored four in the stretch as UWS was hanging around.

UNW, though, was able to put the game out of reach with the help of 21-7 spurt over the game's next six minutes to claim a 63-47 lead with 11 minutes remaining. The Eagles cruised from there to earn their third consecutive victory.

UNW shot 55.2 percent from the floor in the second half and outrebounded the 'Jackets, 40-31 for the game. The Eagles' bench players scored 43 points, compared to 14 by the UWS bench.

The Yellowjackets play host North Central Saturday at 4:45 p.m., at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
