OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Superior volleyball team won its second five-set match of the season Saturday, outlasting Luther to close the UW-Oshkosh Marty Petersen Invitational.

The Yellowjackets won by set scores of 23-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-17 and 15-13. UWS dropped its first match of the day to the host Titans in four sets, before winning the second 27-25 to knot the match at 1-1.

UWS placed three players in double-figure kills against Luther. Junior
Cami Sletta (Willmar, Minn./Willmar Senior) had 15, senior
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) had 13 to go with 17 digs and freshman
Gina Baertsch (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Area) had 10 kills and 26 assists. She also added six digs and five block assists. As a team, UWS clogged the net with 17 block assists for the match.

After falling in the first set by two, the 'Jackets bounced back to even the match in the second period, hitting .387 with 14 of their kills. UWS scored the first 10 points of the set with the help of four aces by Baertsch and three kills from Colligan.

UWS led by as many as 12 at 15-3 when
Yana Carrera (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West Senior) added an ace.

Luther (4-18) took the third set to regain the lead, forcing UWS to win the final two for the match.

Trailing 13-10 in the fourth set, UWS scored five straight points, a run sparked by kills from Sletta and
Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) and a block by the same two for a 15-13 advantage. Luther responded with three consecutive to retake the lead, but the 'Jackets rattled off eight points for a 23-16 edge. A service error stopped the spurt but UWS took the set two points later.

In the fifth, UWS led, 4-0, on a pair of Luther errors a Baertsch ace and Sletta kill. The Norse rallied to tie, 8-8, winning the next two points on two kills from Paige Yontz for a 10-8 edge.
Hailey Atwood (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) followed with an ace for an 11-10 Superior lead before two more kills by Yontz made it 12-11 Luther.Â

The 'Jackets, though, scored four of the final five points, sealing the match with a
Lexi Oeltjen (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater Area) kill.Â

Yontz led Luther with 17 kills, adding 12 digs in the loss.

The 'Jackets refused to go down without a fight against UW-Oshkosh, battling in extra points to even the match in the second set. Superior led, 6-3, before Oshkosh scored six straight. UWS then rallied for four points to take a 10-9 edge, but were quickly down 14-10 with another five-point run from the host.

Down, 24-19, UWS staved off five set points, finally winning the set with the help of three consecutive errors by Oshkosh. The Titans won the final two sets to win the match.

Sletta tallied 11 kills versus UWO while Carrera totaled four aces and a match-high 25 digs. She earned all-tournament team honors, hitting .283 with 26 kills, six digs and three blocks for the weekend.

Oshkosh (15-7) received 15 kills and seven digs from Carissa Sundholm.Â

Superior (11-14) returns home to face St. Scholastica in UMAC play. First serve is slated for 7 p.m., at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
