SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's soccer team extended its winning streak in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play to five matches with a 2-0 shutout of Minnesota Morris at NBC Spartan Sports Complex Saturday.
With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 6-7-2 overall and moved into a tie a atop the league standings with St. Scholastica. The Saints (9-6-0, 5-0-0 UMAC) were idle on Saturday.
UWS jumped on top early against the Cougars, benefitting from an own goal just 4:35 into the contest. On the play
Emma Street (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis) fired a cross from the right flank that glanced off of a Minnesota Morris defender and into the net. It was the second own goal in Superior's favor in a week. The opening goal at Bethany Lutheran last Saturday went in off a BLC player, as well.
The 'Jackets controlled play for the rest of the half with a handful of quality chances, but were unable to expand the lead.
UWS outshot Morris, 7-3, in the half, including 5-1 in shots on goal.
As game wore on in the second half, Morris pressured, forcing UWS into a defensive posture. Superior, though, was stout, not allowing the Cougars an opportunity to tie the match.
Then, in the 84th minute,
Kenzie Oehlerking (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Area) was fouled in the box in a rush to the goal. She buried the resulting penalty kick for the final margin. The goal was Oehlerking was her second of the season, both from the penalty spot.
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) earned her second shutout of the season, making one save. Bernedette Ceinik stopped five shots for Morris in the loss.

Sam Street (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis).
UWS is back in action Tuesday in its final regular-season home UMAC match against Northwestern at 1 p.m.
