SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's soccer team saw its five-match Upper Midwest Athletic Conference winning streak halted in a 1-0 loss to Northwestern Tuesday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Northwestern controlled play throughout the day, outshooting UWS 32-2, overall. Sophomore goalkeeper
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka), the reigning UMAC Defensive Player of the Week, kept the Yellowjackets in the contest. She made 19 saves, including 11 in the second half.
The only goal of the match came in the 64th minute. Gutekunst turned a shot from Anna Welch away, but Danielle Roberts collected the rebound and deposited it into the upper-right corner for the lead.
The 'Jackets were unable to muster sustained pressure the rest of the match and fell to 5-1-0 in the UMAC and 6-8-2 overall.
With the win, Northwestern pulls into a tie atop the UMAC standings and moves to 8-10-0 overall. Eagles' goalkeeper Ellie Fryer earned the shutout, making a save on
Emma Street (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis) at the end of the first half.
UWS returns to action at St. Scholastica next Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., at Saints Field in Duluth.
