Tavemark's Second-Half Goal Lifts ‘Jackets to 1-0 Victory at St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. – Junior defender Pontus Tavemark (Taeby, Sweden/Taeby Enskilden Gymnasium) finished a corner kick from sophomore Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) in the 59th minute as the UW-Superior men's soccer team shut out St. Scholastica, 1-0, at Saints Field Wednesday.

On the goal, Perry lofted the corner to the back post, even with the penalty spot. The ball deflected off of Tavemark and past St. Scholastica goalkeeper Corey Bulheller into the bottom left of the net. The goal for Tavemark is his second career tally and first since Sept. 23, 2017 against Martin Luther.

With the win, UWS improves to 6-2-2 and remains perfect in the UMAC at 2-0-0, topping CSS for the third consecutive match. Superior is 3-0-2 in its last five with the Saints. St. Scholastica drops to 2-10-0 and 2-1-0 in the league.

After a tight first half, UWS put the pressure on, and it seemed that a goal was coming in the second. Just five minutes prior to the marker, Perry hit the crossbar with a rising shot. Junior Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) also hit the crossbar in the 83rd minute.

Senior goalkeeper Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) stopped made one save to earn his second shutout of the season and seventh of his career, improving to 4-2-1. Bulheller took the loss, while making six saves.

The 'Jackets outshot CSS, 17-6, for the match and had five corner kicks to three for the hosts.

UWS returns to action Saturday at Martin Luther. Kickoff in New Ulm, Minn., is set for 2 p.m.
