Second-Half Flurry Gives St. Scholastica 4-0 Win over Women’s Soccer

DULUTH, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's soccer team hung with St. Scholastica through the first half, but the Saints scored four times in the second for a 4-0 victory at Saints Field Tuesday.

With the win, St. Scholastica earned the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season title with an 8-0-0 record. UWS (6-9-2, 5-2-0 UMAC) will either be the No. 2 or 3 seed in the conference tournament. The Yellowjackets have one league match remaining at Martin Luther Nov. 2.

The Saints scored just 31 seconds into the second half and again 2:35 later to build their lead. Morgan Friday figured into three of the four goals, scoring twice and adding an assist for CSS, which improved to 12-7-0 overall.

UWS goalkeeper Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) made nine saves, including five in the first half to help keep it scoreless into the break. CSS outshot the 'Jackets, 13-1, for the match.

Mackenzie Nelson opened the scoring with an assist from Emily Olson, before Nelson assisted on Kaiya Quam's goal that made it 2-0.

Friday pushed the lead to 3-0 at 75:49 and gave the Saints the final margin of victory 3:51 later.

Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) took the 'Jackets' only shot on target in the 22nd minute.

Alexa Gothard picked up the shutout for the Saints, her eighth of the season.

Superior closes its regular-season home slate with a non-conference match against North Central Thursday at 7 p.m. UWS topped NCU, 4-0, at NBC Spartan Sports Complex Oct. 9.
