Scott Wilson (Ladybank, Scotland/Bell Baxter) buried a penalty kick in the 65th minute and classmate
Ulrik Lager (Vollen, Norway/Asker VGS) made it stand up as the UW-Superior men's soccer team nipped St. John's, 1-0, at Haws Field Saturday.
Wilson, a transfer from NCAA Division II Gannon, beat Johnnies' goalkeeper Payton Spencer with 64:37 on the clock for his first goal at UWS. From there, Lager stopped two shots, including an SJU penalty by Leighton Lommel, to preserve his first shutout of the season.
With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 13-2-2. The loss dopped St. John's to 8-7-0.
The 'Jackets were outshot, 19-16 overall, and 10-7 in shots on goal in the match, but Lager stood tall, making six saves in the second half to pick up his second career clean sheet.
Lager improved to 2-0-1 on the season with the victory. Spencer made six saves, falling to 4-4-0
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) took a match-high five shots, while
Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) fired three and
Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) had two for Superior.
UWS closes the regular season Saturday with a rescheduled match from Sept. 11 at Bethel. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
