SUPERIOR, Wis. – Freshman
Ivy Grochowski (Duluth, Minn./Denfield) scored in the 82nd minute to lift the UW-Superior women's soccer team to a 4-3 non-conference victory over North Central in the Yellowjackets' home finale at NBC Spartan Sports Complex Thursday.
Grochowski's first career goal broke a 3-3 tie in a back-and-forth match. On the game-winning goal, she deposited a pass from senior
Tatum Lardinois (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) into the top left corner of the net, past North Central's Ellie Tieszen.
Sophomore
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) and senior
Kaylie Johnson (Amery, Wis./Amery) each tallied a goal and assist to help UWS sweep NCU in the two-match season series. Superior also shut out the Rams, 4-0, in UMAC play Oct. 9. The win improves the 'Jackets to 7-9-2 while NCU's season concludes at 1-15-0.
UWS built a 2-0 lead in the first half before the Rams battled back to knot the match, 2-2, with 11 minutes left in the first half. Johnson and Schussman scored 2:48 apart for the lead, with Johnson's goal, assisted by Schussman, coming at 15:08. The pair switched roles to link up again to double the lead at 17:56.
Mikel Vacek got the Rams on the scoreboard in the 30th minute, converting a header off a pass from Emma Brekhus. NCU tied it with a Brekhus goal from Kara Lewis in the 34th.
Olivia Gaffney (Mahtowa, Minn./Cloquet) scored her second goal of the season in the 40th minute to give UWS the lead again going into halftime.
Rachel Cribb then tied the match again in the 55th minute.
The 'Jackets outshot the Rams, 26-11, overall and 14-9 in shots target. UWS had five corner kicks to four for NCU.
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) picked up the win the nets for UWS, making six saves – three in each half. Tieszen made 10 saves for the Rams in the loss.
The 'Jackets closes the regular season Saturday on the road at Martin Luther in a 2:30 p.m., start. The match is a makeup from an Oct. 5 postponement.
