NEW ULM, Minn. – Martin Luther's Lydia Bitter scored in the 97th minute as the Knights nipped the UW-Superior women's soccer team, 1-0, in overtime in the regular-season finale for both teams at Knight Field Saturday.
Bitter slipped the only shot of extra time past UWS goalkeeper
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) to help the Knights secure the No. 4-seed in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament. MLC will face Bethany Lutheran at home in the quarterfinals Monday.
On the winning goal, Bitter broke free in the box and slotted the ball far post on the ground on Gutekunst.
Martin Luther controlled play much of the day, holding a 19-3 advantage in shots, including 11-3 on goal.
The Yellowjackets got shots on goal from
Kaylie Johnson (Amery, Wis./Amery),
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) and
Etta Sorenson (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) in the match. Gutekunst stopped 10 shots in goal. Mollie Fisher picked up the shutout in the Martin Luther net.
UWS, which closes the regular season, 7-10-2 overall and 5-3-0 in the league, will head to Northwestern to take on the second-seeded Eagles Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Knights finish the conference slate 7-9-1 overall and 4-3-1 in league play.
