SUPERIOR, Wis.: Last Friday night the Yellowjackets used a quick-strike offense to pull even with Hamline in the third period, a game that eventually ended in a 2-2 tie. Saturday night the Yellowjackets again employed an attack that posted goals in quick succession to tie the game in the third period, this time against UW-Eau Claire, but the result wasn't the same this time around.
Addie Young scored at 1:23 of overtime to lift Eau Claire to a 3-2 win over the Yellowjackets before 166 at Wessman Arena. Eau Claire has now won six straight games against the Yellowjackets (2-1-1, 0-1-0 WIAC), dating back to the 2017-18 season.
The Yellowjackets came out flying in the first period, but a penalty just 70 seconds swung the momentum to the Blugolds, who outshot the Yellowjackets 17-3 in the period. Eau Claire also went to the power play four times in the period, a dangerous proposition for the Yellowjackets, as the Blugolds came into the game firing at 31.7 percent efficiency on the power play.
Eau Claire scored the game's first goal on a 4-on-3 power play when Taylor Treu broke between the defense and snapped a shot from between the circles that beat
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) low at 17:55 of the first period. They added to the lead at 5:33 of the second when Emma Peterson slipped behind the Yellowjacket defense and converted a perfect lead pass, banking a shot off the left post and in to make it 2-0.
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) had three great chances to get the Yellowjackets on the board in the second, but twice she was turned away by Blugold goaltender Erin Connolly while the third shot went off the crossbar late in the period.
Down 2-0 the Yellowjackets finally broke through when Martinson got a loose puck to the right of the goal and lifted it over the left arm of Connolly at 10:38 of the third period to cut the Eau Claire lead in half. It was the fourth goal of the year for Martinson, who has now scored once in every game.
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) and
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) assisted.
The public address announcer barely had a chance to finish making his announcement when the Yellowjackets struck again. This time
Myka Sutherland (Champlin, Minn./Home School) got the puck at the right point and put a shot toward the net. The knuckling puck fooled Connolly, and it glanced off her glove and into the top corner at 12:25 to tie the game 2-2.
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) got the assist.
With under a minute to go in regulation the Yellowjackets went on the power play for the fifth time in the game, giving them a golden opportunity to pick up the come-from-behind win, but again the power play came up empty. Moments after the advantage expired, Young became the hero for Eau Claire, redirecting a pass past Johnson for the win.
Johnson was rock-solid in goal for the Yellowjackets, finishing the night with 28 stops. At the other end Connolly finished with 20 saves.
