SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team exploded for five first-period goals, coasting to a 10-2 victory over Northland at Wessman Arena Friday.
 
Junior Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) scored two goals and added three assists for a career-high five points to pace a group of three players with two goals apiece. Classmate Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) also scored two times, including the Yellowjackets' first power-play goal of the season. Senior Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) recorded her team-leading fifth and sixth tallies of the year, as UWS improved to 3-1-1 on the season.
 
In all, seven players scored goals and 11 collected points for Superior. Five different skaters registered multiple points on the day. Freshman Cassie McClure (Duluth, Minn./Denfield) and sophomore C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) each posted a goal and assist in the win, the 'Jackets first in the WIAC this season.
 
Sergent wasted no time getting her team on the board just 49 seconds into the game with her first goal of the season from inside the blue line. Curtis scored 61 seconds later for a 2-0 lead. McClure made it 3-0 on a backhander in front of Northland goaltender Gabby Suhr, who surrendered the first five goals, lasting only 13:10.
 
Martinson scored the final two goals of the period 2:59 apart. On the second of the two, she took deft pass from Sergent in tight and beat Suhr at 12:22. Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) also assisted on the play.
 
Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) scored her first of the year at 6:28 of the second to make it 6-0. She finished the rebound of a Rachel Garland (Windsor, Colo./Colorado Connections Academy) shot. Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) also assisted on the goal. Sergent added her second 22 seconds later, streaking down the near wing. She surprised the second Northland goalie, Aubrielle Champagne, short side for a 7-0 advantage.
 
The LumberJills finally solved Superior's Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) at 8:56 of the second period on the power play as Samantha Scott's point shot was tipped home by Mahteya Dumelie to cut into the deficit.
 
Hayes, Hannah Magnusson (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) – with her first career goal – and Curtis scored the final three goals for the 'Jackets before Dumelie added her second of the day at 18:26 of the third periodfor the 'Jills.
 
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) made 20 saves for UWS in the win. Suhr stopped three shots, Champagne seven and Teagan Johnson 17 for Northland (2-6-0, 0-3-0 WIAC).
 
The 'Jackets have a quick turnaround, hosting UW-Stevens Point at 2 p.m., Saturday.
