ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's basketball team outscored No. 9 St. Thomas in the second and fourth quarters Wednesday, but the Tommies shot 66.7 percent from the field overall for a 78-60 victory at Schoenecker Arena.
Three Yellowjackets scored in double figures as
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) had 15 points and four rebounds to lead the way.
Pashia Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) registered 13 points and
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) 11 for UWS (2-3).
St. Thomas ran out to a 22-9 lead in the first quarter in its home opener, but Superior closed to a 30-20 deficit at halftime with the help of a 56 percent shooting effort of its own in the period. Scott had seven points in the quarter and Carpenter added five. UST (3-0) opened the second half with a 10-0 run to take the wind out of the 'Jackets' sails.
After the Tommies' Brynne Rolland knocked down a 3-pointer following an Amber Darge steal, Reinertsen hit consecutive jumpers to cut the lead to 66-50 with 8:17 to play. That was as close as Superior got the rest of the game.
Four St. Thomas players scored double digits, paced by Darge with 20 and Rolland with 17. UST converted 19 UWS turnovers into 29 points and had 23 assists on 30 made baskets for the night.
The 'Jackets shot nearly 47 percent from the field (22-of-47), but St. Thomas missed just 15 attempts from the floor (30-for-45) and made half of its 18 3-point tries.
The teams were deadlocked at 23 rebounds apiece; UWS had nine offensive boards to UST's four.
Superior travels to St. Benedict Thursday. Game time at Claire Lynch Gym is 7 p.m.
