SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team received goals from five different players in a 6-3 win over UW-Stevens Point to complete a weekend sweep at Wessman Area Saturday.
With the win, the Yellowjackets improve to 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the WIAC after topping Northland Friday. UWS carried the play most of the day, outshooting the Pointers, 37-18, while also blocking 14 UWSP shots.
Senior
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) was Superior's only multiple-goal scorer in the game, potting her seventh and eighth of the season. She has now scored at least once in all six games to begin the year.
Ashley Schintz (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti),
Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park),
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) and
Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) also tallied for UWS.
Schintz opened the scoring at 3:58 of the first when she stole a clearing pass, carried it to the left circle and fired a shot off the right post and in, past Olivia Schultz in the Pointers' net.
Wood doubled the lead midway through the period, beating Schultz with a wrister.
Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) won the faceoff and
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) got the puck up the boards to Wood on the goal.
UWSP got on the scoreboard less than three minutes later as Emma Berthiaume stickhandled around the defense and lifted a shot over the glove of
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) at 13:33.
Sergent made it 3-1 just 1:21 into the second period with a short-handed goal. She streaked down the right wing, cut to the middle of the ice and beat Schultz. Then, at 5:03, Byfuglein walked out of the left-wing corner on the power play for a 4-1 edge.
Martinson scored 1:31 later as she deked to her backhand and slipped it by Shultz for 5-1.
Stevens Point (4-3-1, 0-2-0 WIAC) got itself back in the game with a pair of goals 3:06 apart to pull within 5-3. Alex Grubbs scored for UWSP at 11:43 of the second period, intercepting a pass up the middle of the ice and beating Johnson to the stick side. Berthiaume then added her second of the day at 14:49.
That was as close as the Pointers got, though, as Martinson scored the 'Jackets' second short-handed goal of the period at 18:29 for what was the final margin. On the play, she dug the puck out of the corner and beat Marit Larson, on in relief of Schultz, between her pads.
Johnson made 15 saves in the UWS net for the victory. Shultz stopped 21 in 30:52 before giving way to Larson, who stopped 10 shots in 27:46.
