DULUTH, Minn. – Senior goaltender
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) made 20 saves and sophomore
C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) banged home a rebound at 1:11 of the third period for the game winner, as the UW-Superior women's hockey team shut out St. Scholastica, 2-0, at Mars Lakeview Arena Tuesday.
Johnson earned the second shutout of her career, with the help of five saves on four St. Scholastica power plays in the third period. Several of those stops came during a lengthy 5-on-3 midway through the final 20 minutes.
The Yellowjackets moved to 5-1-1 on the season with their third consecutive win. UWS also snapped a three-game losing streak to CSS and improved to 10-7-1 all-time against the Saints, including a 7-2-0 mark on the road.
Scoreless through two periods, Superior finally solved St. Scholastica goalie Lexi Thomeczek (26 saves) when Hayes converted the rebound of a
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) shot to get on the board 71 seconds into the period.
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) also assisted on the fourth goal of the season for Hayes.
From there, the 'Jackets took three minor penalties within a minute.
Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) was whistled for slashing at 9:16,
Myka Sutherland (Champlin, Minn./Home School) cross checking at 10:01 and
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) roughing at 10:16. Johnson and the UWS defense (which blocked 18 shots on the night) stood tall, though, keeping the Saints off the scoreboard.
Byfuglien took a tripping penalty at 17:23, giving CSS the chance to use its timeout and to draw up a play for the ensuing power play. Johnson made two saves on that opportunity – one on Taylor Murray and another on Taylor Thompson – to keep the lead.
The Saints pulled Thomeczek for an extra skater just after the power play expired, and
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) made them pay. Martinson scored her ninth goal of the season with 17 seconds left into the empty net, on an assist from
Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward), to nail down the victory.
Martinson now has at least one goal in all seven of the 'Jackets' games to start the season.
St. Scholastica (4-6-0) finished 0-for-7 on the power play, while UWS was scoreless in two chances.
Curtis led the 'Jackets' defensive effort with five blocked shots.
UWS hosts St. Catherine in the front end of a home-and-home Friday at 7 p.m., at Wessman Arena.
