ST. PAUL, Minn.: It was a comeback for the ages Friday night for the Yellowjacket women's hockey team, as they took on Hamline, the No. 4 team in the nation according to USCHO. After falling behind in the opening minute of the game, the Yellowjackets rallied, scoring twice in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, and ultimately skate to a 2-2 tie with the Pipers at Tria Arena in Minnesota's capital city.
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) scored her first goal of the season with just five seconds left in the third period to draw the Yellowjackets (2-0-1) even. The goal capped a chaotic final minute of play, one that saw three of the game's four goals get put on the board.
Early on, however, it looked like things weren't going to go the Yellowjackets' way. Molly Garin opened the scoring for Hamline early, beating Yellowjacket goaltender
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) just 27 seconds after the opening faceoff to make it 1-0 Pipers. The Yellowjackets outshot the Pipers 8-7 in the first, but couldn't find the back of the net and trailed after 20 minutes.
Hamline outshot the Yellowjackets 14-6 in the second period, but penalties were a factor in the frame. The 'Jackets were whistled for four penalties, but the penalty kill came through and kept it a one-goal game. The penalties continued in the third, but again the Yellowjacket penalty kill had answers, killing off all four Piper power plays.
With a minute left to play in regulation the Yellowjackets pulled Johnson in favor of the extra attacker, but instead Hamline took advantage, as Taylor Stefan scored into the empty net just 10 seconds later to give Hamline a 2-0 lead and what looked like a sure victory.
The Yellowjackets had other ideas.
They broke through with just 20 seconds left in regulation when
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) picked up her third goal of the year to cut the Hamline lead in half. Martinson has now scored a goal in each of the Yellowjackets' first three games of the year. Then, with time ticking away, Curtis converted on an assist from Martinson to tie the score.
In the overtime each team had two shots on goal, but neither could net the game-winner and the teams settled for a tie.
Johnson was rock solid in goal for the Yellowjackets, finishing the night with 31 saves in her third straight start.
The Yellowjackets return home Saturday, November 16 when they open WIAC play against UW-Eau Claire at Wessman Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
