SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team scored two goals in the third period to break a 1-1 deadlock and held on for a 3-2 victory over St. Catherine at Wessman Arena Friday.

With the win, their fourth consecutive, the Yellowjackets improve to 6-1-1 on the season. The same two teams face each other Saturday at Drake Arena in St. Paul, Minn., at 2 p.m.

The Wildcats broke on top on their first power-play chance of the night as Sophia Gorski snuck the puck past UWS goaltender McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) along the ice at 7:31. Assists on the play went to Lexi Muller and Emilee Anderson.

Superior held a heavy 16-7 advantage in shots in the period despite being down a goal.

The 'Jackets dominated both offensively and territorially in the middle frame and finally were able to earn the equalizer at 16:58 of the period. Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) scored her first goal of the year from freshman Cassie McClure (Duluth, Minn./Denfield).

UWS led, 31-11, in shots through two periods and extended it to a 42-18 advantage by game's end.

Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) gave the 'Jackets a 2-1 lead at 8:20 of the third from C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances), before Hayes pushed it to a 3-1 edge with the game winner at 16:21 from Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau). St. Catherine (5-5-0) pulled goalie Elizabeth Kubicek with 3:21 to play and got an extra-attacker goal with 1:04 left from Laura Denchfield to account for the final margin.

Whalen made 16 saves to earn the win in her first action of the season. Kubicek was busy for the Wildcats, stopping 39 in a losing effort.

SCU for 1-for-6 on the power play while the 'Jackets went scoreless in two opportunities.
