SUPERIOR, Wis. – Seniors
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) combined for 41 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, lifting the UW-Superior women's basketball team to a 75-64 win over St. Scholastica Wednesday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
Ruiz set a career high in points for the second consecutive game with 21 on 7-for-10 shooting and Reinertsen added 20, six rebounds, five assists, five blocks and two steals as the Yellowjackets improved to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Fellow senior
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) was a third 'Jacket in double figures with 13 points, also grabbing six boards.
UWS never relinquished the lead after Ruiz hit one of her two 3-pointers on the night in the first minute. Superior led, 25-16, after the first quarter and 37-26 at halftime. The 'Jackets held off a late charge from the Saints down the stretch for the win.
Leading by just seven at the start at the start of the fourth quarter, the Saints' Eve Turner hit a jumper followed by an Amelia Zmuda layup in transition to pull St. Scholastica within 51-48 with 9:15 remaining.
From there, UWS used a 9-3 spurt, taking a 60-51 edge with 5:43 left on a Carpenter fastbreak bucket. UWS transfer
Morgan Anderson (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) pulled the Saints back within five at 62-57 with 3:21 left on a layup off of a pass by Kaela Huber, but the 'Jackets scored seven of the next eight points. Carpenter capped that run with a three-point play with 2:19, making it 69-58.
Ruiz then made two free throws, and a layup and Reinertsen added two more from the line to account for the final margin.
UWS shot 25-of-59 (42.4 percent) for the game, while outrebounding the Saints, 39-34. Superior scored 22 fastbreak points, as well.
Anderson led St. Scholastica (2-7, 1-2) in the loss with 15 points and six rebounds in 25 minutes against her former team.
The 'Jackets now prepare for a rematch of last season's UMAC championship game slated for Saturday at 4:45 against Bethany Lutheran at home.
