ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) scored two goals and an assist and junior
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) added two goals as the UW-Superior women's hockey team completed a weekend home-and-home sweep of St. Catherine with a 5-4 win Saturday at Drake Arena.
Martinson scored the game winner short-handed at 9:16 of the third period from
Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln), her 11th goal of the season in just nine games. The Yellowjackets improved to 7-1-1 on the season with the win and 13-3-1 all-time against the Wildcats dating back to the 1998-99 season.
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) earned her second consecutive start and victory in net, making 31 saves, including 14 in the second period.
UWS took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by
Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) and Martinson at 2:40 and 7:19, respectively. The teams traded tallies in the second. Sergent scored at 7:51 from Martinson to make it 3-1, before goals by SCU's Lexi Muller and Marie Reimer 2:33 apart knotted the game at 3-3.
Sergent gave the 'Jackets a 4-3 advantage at 6:23 of the third from Shelton. Sophia Goreki pulled St. Catherine back within one at 13:08, but the Wildcats got no closer.
SCU fell to 5-6-0 with the loss with Elizabeth Kubicek and Karly Schmidt share goaltending duties. Schmidt played the first 49 minutes, making 23 saves before giving way to Elizabeth Kubicek for the final nine.
The 'Jackets are off until travelling to Gustavus Adolphus Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.
