ST. PETER, Minn. – Junior forward
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) scored a goal and an assist and senior goaltender
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) turned away 32-of-33 shots as the UW-Superior women's hockey team upended fourth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus, 2-1, at Don Roberts Ice Rink Friday.
The Yellowjackets overcame a Gustavus power-play goal in the first minute of the second period, scoring twice in the middle frame, and held on in the third for the win. UWS (8-1-1) ended a five-game losing skid against the Gusties, winning for just the fifth time in the 28-game all-time series.
Johnson was spectacular all night, particularly in the third, making 15 saves. The 'Jackets were hemmed into their own zone much of the period, only able to muster one shot. Superior played well in front of Johnson, blocking 18 shots for the game, several down the stretch.
After Kayla Vrieze tipped a home a shot from Kristen Cash from the midpoint on the power play 33 seconds into the second, senior
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) responded. She took a feed from Sergent from behind the goal line on the left and beat Gustavus goalie Amelia Helms-Leslie from in tight at 6:38 to tie the game, 1-1. Martinson's 12th goal in 10 games this season gives her the NCAA lead in goals per game.
At 14:42, Sergent put the 'Jackets on top with what was the Gusties' first power-play goal against of the season in 20 attempts. She ripped home another pass from behind the net – this one from sophomore
Jenna Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) – from the high slot.
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) also assisted on Sergent's sixth goal and first game winner of the season.
Superior, which averages the 14.3 penalty minutes per game, the second highest total in Division III, gave Gustavus chances to run away with the game, especially early. The Gusties enjoyed four extra-skater opportunities in the opening 20 minutes, seven for the game, and had 13 shots on them.
Gustavus held a 33-11 advantage in shots on goal with Helms-Leslie making nine saves.
The 'Jackets, winners of their last six games, head to Minneapolis for a 4 p.m., faceoff with Augsburg on Saturday.
