SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's basketball team limited visiting Waldorf to single digits in the second and fourth quarters, holding the Warriors to 28 percent shooting in an 83-45 win to close the Superior Shootout Holiday Classic Monday.
The Yellowjackets received at least six points apiece from seven different players while shooting 43.8 percent from the field. UWS improved to 7-5 on the season in the victory, one that was nailed down with a dominating performance in the fourth quarter. Superior outscored Waldorf, 30-9, in the final period, hitting on 10-of-18 shots.
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) and
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) each scored 14 points and
Pashia Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) added 12. Ruiz was 4-for-8 from 3-point range with three assists and three steals. Reinertson had seven rebounds and a blocked shot.
Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) finished with four points and a game-high nine boards.
The 'Jackets began the second quarter on an 11-0 run to break open a 21-16 game after 10 minutes. Four players scored in the stretch, led by Reinertsen with five, to take a 32-16 advantage with four minutes remaining in the half. UWS led, 36-24, at the break.
Superior pushed the lead to 20 at 52-32 on a pair of free throws from Reinertsen with 2:25 left in the third.
A group of four freshmen –
Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior),
Paris Kallevig (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake),
Destiny Haldeman (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie) and
Liberty Blaine (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior) – made strong contributions in the fourth. Christian scored five points to lead all players in the period, while Kallevig, Haldeman and Blaine chipped in with four each. The quartet was 7-of-10 from the floor to help their team close out the game.
Waldorf was led by Morgan Straight and Tina Lair Van-Meter with 14 and 13 points, respectively, as the Warriors fell to 0-10 on the year.
