ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – Senior guard
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) scored 15 of her 25 points in the second half to lead the UW-Superior women's basketball team to its 13th consecutive win over Crown, 67-45, at Wild Athletic Center Wednesday.
Reinertsen shot 5-for-9 from the field in the final 20 minutes to help break open the game. With the win, the Yellowjackets, kept pace with Northwestern, a 95-65 winner against Northland Wednesday, at 4-1 (8-5 overall) atop the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Reinertsen also corralled 10 rebounds on the night, picking up her third double-double of the season.
The 'Jackets forced a season-high 33 Crown (4-8, 1-4 UMAC) turnovers – including 24 steals – to pull away in the second half. UWS scored 21 points off those miscues in the game.
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) added 10 points, seven assists and five steals for UWS, which shot just over 40 percent (25-for-62).
The first half featured six ties and 13 lead changes with neither team gaining an advantage of more than five points. The lone five-point lead of the half came on a Reinertsen layup from
Destiny Haldeman (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie) with 1:28 to play in the second quarter, making it 30-25. Crown, though, closed the gap to 30-29 before halftime as Shauna Thompson hit a layup with six seconds left.
The defense tightened in the second half as UWS allowed just eight points each in the third and fourth quarters, while Superior scored 37.
A Haldeman jumper with 2:20 remaining in the third gave the 'Jackets an eight-point, 42-35, lead. Superior entered the fourth quarter up, 45-37, on a Reinertsen layup, assisted by
Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial).
Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior) stripped Amy Martius of the ball on Crown's first possession of the fourth and fed the ball ahead to Carpenter in transition. Her layup gave Superior its first double-figure edge at 47-37.
A jumper by Sanders at the 7:48 mark gave the 'Jackets a double-digit lead it would not lose the rest of the way.
Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) hit consecutive shots, pushing it to a 62-43 edge with 2:44 left.
Liberty Blaine (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids Senior) then made for the final margin with a 3-pointer on the break with 38 seconds left.
Thompson and Stevey De La Ossa led Crown with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Superior next heads to Martin Luther at 4:45 p.m., on Saturday.
