MARQUETTE, Mich.:Â The UW-Superior opened the 2019 season in the 14th-annual Finlandia Dome Classic Saturday, falling to Marian, 9-7, before run-ruling Northland, 16-2.

Trailing, 3-1, heading to the bottom of the fourth against Marian, the Yellowjackets (1-1) scored three times to take a 4-3 lead. The Sabres, though, scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to retake the lead, and four more times in the seventh for a 9-4 advantage.

Superior mounted a comeback in the bottom half with the help of a
Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) two-run double with one out. Davrianna Horvath followed, reaching on an error to score Gidley, but the Marian pitcher Myranda Schuttenhelm got out of trouble, inducing two groundouts to end the game and pick up the complete-game win.

The 'Jackets brought out the bats in the nightcap, pounding out 11 hits, scoring two runs in the first, four in the second, four in the third and six in the fifth to end it early.

Four players recorded multiple hits and three scored three runs apiece.
Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) led the way, going 2-for-3 with a double, three runs, two walks and a game-high four RBIs.
Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East),
Lizzy Borgwardt (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) and Gidley also collected to two hits each in the win.

Amanda Kishish (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) limited the Lumberjills to just three hits. She stuck out 10 and did not issue a walk, going the distance to earn her first collegiate win in the circle. Conversely, Northland's Alivia Heller allowed nine earned runs and 10 walks, absorbing the loss for the 'Jills.

Superior closes the tournament Saturday, Feb. 23 against Edgewood at noon and host Finlandia at 2 p.m.
