SUPERIOR, Wis.: Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) scored 25 points on his Senior Day, but the UW-Superior men's basketball team fell, 86-69, to Bethany Lutheran at Mertz Mortorelli Gym on Saturday.
Scott, the Yellowjackets' lone senior this season, who was honored prior to the game for his contributions to the program, shot 8-for-13 on the day, including 5-for-5 from distance. Scott added six rebounds, two assists and a steal as UWS dropped to 6-18 overall and 4-11 in the UMAC.
The Vikings improved to 17-7 and 12-3 in the league with the win. Bethany Lutheran used a game-high 30 points, five boards, two assists and two blocks from Jared Milinkovich. Cire Mayfield and Austin Bauer each tallied 15 points and Jarred Merchant recorded 13 points.
Bethany Lutheran led by just three, 42-39, at halftime, and was able to gain separation in the second half. The Vikings led by as many as 26 just seven minutes into the second half. BLC connected on its first five shots from the field in the second half to open a 57-41 advantage at the 17-minute mark to coast to the victory.
The Vikings shot nearly 64 percent (14-of-22) in the second half and 54 percent (29-of-54) for the game.
Superior hung around in the first half, taking a 23-20 lead on consecutive 3-pointers by
John Pioro (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) and Scott at the 11:36 mark. After Milinkovich knotted it on the next possession with a three of his own,
Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) responded with another triple to reclaim the lead for the Yellowjackets.
The Vikings followed with four quick points for a 27-26 lead prior to
Joan Giner (Tenerife, Spain/IES Mayor Bernabé Rodríguez) hitting a jumper to give UWS a 28-27 edge with 8:30 left in the half.
Scott gave the 'Jackets one final lead at 31-30 on a three with five minutes remaining in the half.
Reykdal and
Andrew McGill (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union) sored nine points apiece for UWS. The 'Jackets outrebounded Bethany Lutheran, 30-28, and matched the Vikings with 20 points in the paint.
Superior closes the regular season next Saturday at North Central. Game time is set for 7:15 p.m., at CLC Gym.
