TUCSON, Ariz.: The UW-Superior baseball team scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning in its season opener against Marian to erase a 2-0 deficit, but the Sabres responded with five in their half for a 7-6 come-from-behind win Saturday.
The Yellowjackets committed nine errors, falling, 14-6, in the nightcap.
Superior starting pitcher
Ryan Rodriguez (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) and Marian's Jordan Bock matched wits for the first four innings of game one, each putting up zeros.
Marian broke on top with two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single and a steal of home.
The 'Jackets finally got some momentum top of the sixth.
Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) began the inning with a double to right field.
Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) followed with a single and
Mike Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) walked to load the bases. After a lineout, Bock hit
Zach Remund (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) with a pitch to make it a 2-1 game.
Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) then took Bock down the right-field line, plating Mike Rodriquez and Miller for a 3-2 UWS lead.
Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) knocked Bock out of the game with a two-run single to left as the 'Jackets opened a 5-2 advantage.
Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) greeted Logan Bosquez with a ringing double to right-center field, putting runners on second and third with one out. After a strikeout, Boyd reached on a throwing error by the third baseman to score Rolf.
Marian retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Jake Arens singled to left center off of reliever Mikey Piletich, scoring two. Nick Dugandzic then hit a RBI single for a 6-5 deficit.
Gunner Johnson (Superior, Wis./Superior) came in for Piletich. Johnson after a walk, both Dugandzic and pinch-runner Landon Gosch scored the tying and winning runs, respectively.
The 'Jackets outhit Marian, 12-5, in the game with Rolf leading the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and two RBIs.
The Sabres broke open a 2-2 game in the top of the fourth inning of the second game. Down, 8-2, in the fifth, Superior plated four to get within two. The big blow came from Miller, who tripled to left center, scoring Boyde and
Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount).
Marian put up three runs each in the sixth and seventh innings with the help of a combined four errors for the final margin.
The 'Jackets are back in action with a doubleheader against Augsburg starting at noon CT at Kino Sports Complex.
