ORLANDO, Fla. – The UW-Superior women's tennis team ran into tough competition on the final day of play in Florida on Thursday.
The Yellowjackets fell, 9-0, to No. 28 Denison at Lake Cane Tennis Center to start the day and 8-1 to Springfield at the USTA National Campus to end it. Superior closes its Florida slate 2-4 with wins against Saint Ambrose and Western New England – both 5-4.
Denison, in addition to its national ranking, is also currently No. 6 its region.
The Big Red won all nine matches in straight sets. The No. 3 double pair of
Alison Tollas (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) and
Olivia Roberts (Rhinelander, Wis. /Rhinelander) took the most games from Denison – four – on the day, falling, 8-4, to Lucy Deal and Morgan Arroyo.
Kitana Honkola (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) also took four games in the second set of her No. 6 singles match with Deal.
Against Springfield, Honklola outlasted Juliette Piazza on court five to earn the 'Jackets only team point of the day. She won the first set, 6-1, before dropping the second by the same count. Honkola then took the deciding third set, 13-11.
Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) also took her match at No. 6 to three sets. She won the second set, 6-1, after dropping the first, 6-3. Hailey Higgins took the third set, 10-6, to claim the match.
Superior (3-6) opens UMAC play at home against Martin Luther March 30. First serve at Lydia Thering Fieldhouse is slated for 1 p.m.
