Ryan Rodriguez (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) pitched six strong innings as the UW-Superior baseball team claimed a 9-5 victory over Carroll to open its two-game series at Frame Park Sunday.
Boyde drove in three runs and scored once and
Alec Rabin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) also collected three hits in four at-bats, scoring twice to pace the Yellowjackets' 12-hit attack.
Rodriguez (2-0) scattered six hits and three earned runs, striking out one and walking two.
Boyde helped Superior (5-6) jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With two outs in the inning
Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) doubled down the left-field line and
Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) walked. Boyde followed with a double down the right-field line, scoring both.
Down, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth, Carroll scored twice for a 3-2 lead. Adam Baade lifted a one-out sacrifice fly to right field to make it 2-2, and two batters later, Dylan Callahan singled home Ethan Fleigle.
The 'Jackets put up five runs in the top of the sixth to take control of things.
Boyde led off with his first home run of the season to left field. With one out,
Bryce Meverden (Birnamwood, Wis./Wittenberg-Birnamwood) and Rabin drew consecutive walks, spelling the end of the day for Carroll starting pitcher Alex Moreland (0-2).
Nick Fredrikson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) then reached on an error by the first baseman, scoring pinch runner
Gunner Johnson (Superior, Wis./Superior).
Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) doubled down the left-field line, plating Fredrikson and Rabin for a 6-3 lead. Four batters later, Boyde was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Berrios.
The teams traded single runs in the eighth and ninth innings for the final margin.
Albertson and Fredrikson were the only other 'Jackets with multiple hits on the day with two apiece. Callahan led the Pioneers (6-9) at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The teams close the series Monday with a 2 p.m., first pitch.
