WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll scored runs in all but the second inning to win the back half of its two-game series with the UW-Superior baseball team, 15-5 in seven innings, at Frame Park on Monday.
Just as a five-run inning sixth helped the Yellowjackets win game one Sunday, a quintet of runs in the in the bottom of the fourth Monday for the Pioneers gave them breathing room. Carroll (7-9) broke open a 4-2 game and never looked back.
Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and run scored, while
Cameron Lee (Durban, South Africa/Kearsney College) also had a pair of base hits and a run scored for the 'Jackets (5-7).
Carroll got to UWS right-hander
Auggie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) (1-2) for eight hits and nine runs (eight earned) in 3.1 innings.
Mitch Coulson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) (three hits, three runs, one walk in 2.2 innings) and
Drew Gran (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) (three hits, three runs, two walks in one-third of an inning) didn't fare much better.
The 'Jackets scored first, though.
Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) was hit by a pitch from Carroll starter Seth Smith to lead off the game and stole second. With two outs, he stole third. Then,
Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount) doubled to left-center field, plating Berrios for the 1-0 lead.
Carroll took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning. An RBI single by Justin Baker down the right-field line with one out tied the game. Alex Kermendy followed with a sacrifice fly to left, and Mitch Massino doubled home Baker to cap the scoring in the frame.
Superior made it 3-2 with a run in the top of the second. Boyde started the inning with a single to center, and with two out, stole second.
Alec Rabin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) brought Boyde in with a single to left field.
Up, 4-2, in the fourth, the Pioneers had their five-run outburst, with the help of a pair of two-run singles by Callahan and Massino.
UWS cut the lead to 9-5 in the top of the fifth. Rabin walked to start the inning, followed by a Lee single to left. Berrios doubled to score both runners, moving to third on a throw to the plate.
Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) then added a sac fly to chase Berrios home.
That was as close as the Superior got as Carroll added one run in the bottom of fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh to end the game early.
Smith (2-2) threw a complete game, striking out four and walking two, for the win.
Ethan Fleigle, Callahan, Baker and Massino had three hits apiece for the Pioneers and Callahan scored four times.
The 'Jackets open their home slate with a doubleheader against Finlandia Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m.
