SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Superior men's tennis team's season came to end with a 7-2 loss in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference semifinals to second-seeded Northwestern Wednesday.
The Eagles swept all three doubles matches to start the day. The Yellowjackets' No. 2 team of
Harry Simpson (Derby, England/Derby Moor Academy) and
Will Sherman (Baton Rouge, La./St. Michael) gave Landon Ridpath and Tyrus Studer the best challenge, falling, 8-5.
Simpson claimed one of the 'Jackets' two points, topping Studer at No. 4 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Carter Lamont (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) also beat Isaac Velgersdyk, 6-1, 6-3, on court six.
Brady Anderson (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls) took Matthew Wedin to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles. Wedin won the first set, 6-4, before Anderson responded with a 6-1 victory in the second, sending the match to a deciding third. That was tight, as well. Wedin prevailed, 11-9, to win the match.
Superior's season ends at 7-11 overall. It is the second consecutive season UWS has fallen in the UMAC semifinal match. Northwestern (15-8) advances to the championship final to face top-seeded St. Scholastica Friday in Duluth.
