SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Superior women's tennis team fell to second-seeded Northwestern in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference semifinals, 7-2, on Wednesday.
The Eagles won all three doubles matches to open the match. Both UWS doubles pairs of
Maya Callaway (Duluth, Minn./East) and
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and
Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and
Mariah Linder (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) dropped their Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches, 8-5, respectively.
In singles action,
Alison Tollas (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) beat Emily Knight, 7-5, 6-4, on court two. The 'Jackets second point came from Callaway, who defeated Shawna Spears, 6-1, 6-4 on three.
Both Linder and
Kitana Honkola (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) took their opponents to a deciding third set. Linder beat Gracie Lebrun, 6-3, in the first set at No. 5 singles before dropping the next two. She fell, 6-0, in the middle set and 10-6 in the tiebreaker.
Honkola won her first set on court six, 6-3, against Mafee Rinta. She then dropped the second, 6-4, and, like Linder, lost the tiebreaker, 10-6.
The 'Jackets' season comes to a close in the league semifinals for the second consecutive season with an overall record of 8-9. Northwestern (14-10) advances to the UMAC championship match to face either No. 4 Minnesota Morris or top-seeded St Scholastica Saturday.
